Genetics

Genetics is a funny thing. We always want our children to get the very best attributes that we have to offer and none of the bad stuff like bad teeth, bad eyes, thin hair, etc. But I guess most of the time they inherit the good with the bad.

About a month ago my oldest son mentioned that he was having a hard time seeing the board at school. I immediately wrote to his teacher to have him moved to the front of the class and made an appointment for the eye doctor. My husband thought maybe just maybe T just wanted to get glasses because he had some friends get some.

Alas, we took him in for his appointment and found out that he actually has pretty bad eyesight for such a young kid and it will most likely get worse over time. Lovely....just lovely. He got my eyes.

I will say that he seemed pretty excited about the whole thing. I however couldn't stop thinking about the year I got my glasses (3rd grade). It wasn't that anyone really made fun of me, but I do remember becoming much more shy and I seemed to worry a lot more about what people thought of me. T seems to be totally thrilled about having glasses and being able to see so much more. I hope it stays that way. Kids can be mean sometimes and so far he has been able to let any of that stuff roll off his back.

I guess I won't be shocked when my other boys end up needing glasses or braces or any other variety of stuff. I will say that even if I'm their mom, I do think my boys are pretty stinkin cute and some braces and glasses here and there will just add some character......and that my friends is genetics!

I had a similar experience to yours when I got glasses in fourth grade... NOt fun, and I too am hoping the bad eyesight and teeth skipped a generation. Maybe the plus side to both of us having boys is that they aren't quite so self-conscious about their appearance. Kids can be mean, but for some reason I just think it cuts a bit deeper with the girls.

He looks so cute in them! They've come a long way with frame styles and their ability to make thin lenses. Hopefully T won't ever need the coke bottle lenses that you and BT had to suffer with. :)

I remember getting glasses when I was 2 years old, or so my mother told me. It was either that or surgery! That was so long ago. Things have improved tremendously since way back then and since I opted for Lasec a few years back, my vision is better than ever. I still need glasses to read and at this stage of the game, I feel blessed to have them so I can see! :)

Funny, I just took Cyd to the eyedoctor today. She needs reading glasses though and is already planning how she will take care of them at school. I think Harry Potter has done wonders for how the children of the world view glasses. I'm glad. Zack wants to know when he will get glasses (he WANTS bad eyes like his dad!)

He looks really cute. Nathaniel keeps asking for glasses, so hopefully he won't be too jealous. But makes you kinda wonder how long it has been since he hasn't been able to see too well...

From one early glass wearer to another, Tristan - you look great! I'm glad to hear that kids haven't teased him about his glasses. I think the teasing I got came later when my glasses were no longer cute, but really thick. Hopefully he won't get up to my prescription. But he's a cute enough kid that he can pull it off.
