Out of the Mouth of Babes

I am always amazed at the things my kids say. At one point I kept a journal and wrote those things down. I need to be better at this again. At times it makes us laugh and other times I'm speechless.

Last night we were riding home from my parent's house. The car is pretty quiet and we were just listening to some music. Out of no where, H says "Mom, when are we going to get our bodies back?" Um.."What?" I say. H says, "You know, we die but because of Jesus we will get our bodies back....when though? After we picked our mouths up off the floor, my husband and I proceeded to have a conversation with him that we hope helped without confusing him further.

The funny thing is I just kept thinking that H is 4. I don't know that most of us as adults really think about this too much and here he was just asking the question like he wanted to know if he could watch his favorite show. I think it is Heavenly Father's way of reminding us that these children are here to teach us too. I hope I get better at listening to them!

I remember having a professor at school who always talked about his kids being closer to the veil than he was. He would say, "If you listen and ask them about their Heavenly Father, they just might surprise you what they remember from before."

Now, as I'm typing this I can here my 2 year old screaming and my 4 and 7 year olds sound like they are literally running their bodies into the walls down in the basement. I know kids will be kids and not everything that comes out of their mouths is worth writing down but hey....you never know what will come out of the mouth of babes!

Family Fun

Halloween in February

Okay, I like Valentine's Day as much as the next girl. My husband always is very sweet and takes care of dinner and brings me beautiful roses. That is not where my complaint lies. When I was growing up (no this is not a story about having to walk to school in 3 feet of snow, no boots, and uphill both ways!) all I remember is giving plain old paper valentines. We might have gotten a lollipop here and there but that was about it. Yesterday my two boys came home from school with so much candy I about died. One had full size candy bars from kids in his class. The other son had so much candy that the teacher had to go get grocery sacks for all the kids to put their stuff in because it wouldn't fit in their valentine's boxes. Even the teachers were joining in and giving tons of candy to the kids.

Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVE candy. Some of you may know that I have been known to go to several different stores to purchase my favorite cinnamon gum drop hearts during the holiday season. I even looked up on line to see if they could just ship me a whole box of the hearts so I could have them year round (no such luck!).

Here is the problem. I will eat my food even if I have candy in the house. My children cease to want ANYTHING else except their candy. Here is how a usual conversation will go with my four year-old when he knows he has candy.

7am
H: Mom, I want candy
Me: H, go back to bed. No candy

7:05am

H: Mom, can I have candy now?
Me: No, go back to bed and when it's time to wake up, then we will have breakfast and lunch before there will be any candy.

At breakfast

H: Mom, can I have candy now?
Me. No, eat your breakfast
He proceeds to have one bite of cereal and then replies
H: Mom, can I have candy NOW?

Notice we haven't even gotten past breakfast and lunch....it's an all day battle.

I talked with a friend the other day. I liked what her child's teacher did. There was hardly any candy (like back in the good old days) and the teacher had them make personalized valentines in class where they were supposed to right nice things about each kid. If you think about it, isn't that what we all want? To be appreciated, to be told nice things about us like "I like your hair, your pink shirt is cool". It made me think that it's about time I wrote a love note to my husband to tell him, "I like his hair.....his shirt is cool ...oh and I think he is the greatest!" Maybe we could all do that. Either way...I say my hat is off to that teacher! Thanks for keeping it real and old school!

Is this microphone on?

Okay...so I'm gonna give this a try. Welcome to my world and all the crazy ramblings that go on in my head. I hope with this simple little blog I can keep up better with family and friends far away. Here's to 2008 and trying something new! Wish me luck!
